Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser Review After One Year of Wear

Filson is perhaps one of the best known, and most controversial heritage clothing companies in the US. Touting themselves as the Alaskan outfitter with made in the USA products, their products have been increasing in price while production has moved overseas.

For now, though, the Tin Cloth Cruiser is made in the USA, with the Tin Cloth itself imported from Britain. Filson’s Tin Cloth, a tightly woven 14 to 15oz canvas that is saturated with a mixture of paraffin wax and oils. This makes the fabric incredibly tear resistant, as well as water and wind repellant.

Currently priced at $350, the cruiser isn’t unusually pricy for an American made waxed canvas jacket, though it’s worth noting that it’s unlined. Here’s what else you should know.

Filson’s Tin Cloth Cruiser: First Impressions

  • Feels a little damp on bare skin; wear sleeves
  • Hefty fabric
  • Longer than most jackets

The first thing you notice when you put on the Cruiser, especially with a short-sleeved shirt, is the wet feel of the Oil Tin Cloth. This being my first waxed jacket, I was slightly worried that it might rub off on my shirts, though I didn’t notice any residue — but be careful wearing this in a vehicle, as the oil and wax will likely rub off on the seat and might not be as easy to clean. (This is why the waxed Journeyman backpack has an unwaxed twill panel on its rear, where it rubs against the back.)

The next thing you will surely notice is the heft of this jacket: quite simply, it’s a beast! The size Large that I own weighs over 4lbs. The build quality is fantastic. You feel like you want to run through a forest just to prove that those thorns can’t hurt you. (Warning: jacket doesn’t cover face.) These coats are meant to be worn in the bush. Me chasing after my son on a hike is child’s play in comparison.

Filson Tin Cloth Cruiser Sizing and Fit

  • Roomy fit built for work
  • Size down for a slim fit

If you want a jacket that will allow more room for movement, I suggest going true to size. If you are looking for a less bulky look, size down one size and you will not be disappointed.

The Cruiser is longer than a trucker style jacket, which bodes well for those of us with longer torsos. It covers your backside when you bend down, plus it adds some extra wind protection.

The jacket is unlined and features double layers on the back, front yoke, and sleeves for added protection and insulation. There are four main pockets on the front, each with snap closures. The chest pockets are covered by the front yoke, which allows any water to flow over and keep anything inside, including your phone, nice and dry. There are also two hand warmer pockets, as well as 2 smaller pockets stitched on the breast pockets, perfect for pens, pocket-knife, or zippo. The back also boasts the map pocket, with snap closures on each side, perfect for gloves, scarf, or yes—even a map. (Note that despite Filson themselves calling it a map pocket, many guys will correct you and call it a “game pocket,” insisting it’s for storing the dead fowl you’re hunting. Game pockets, though, are lined.)

Filson also offers a hood that can be purchased separately that can be affixed under the collar with snaps.

What’s It Like to Live In?

  • Very casual
  • Ages well
  • Doesn’t breathe that well

The Tin Cloth Cruiser is the perfect jacket for most casual settings. It looks fantastic with denim or some Chinos, but you will have a very hard time dressing this up.

The somewhat wet feel does mean that in warmer weather it feels cooler to the touch. If you are wearing it in the cold you should know that while it does cut the wind down, it does not insulate very well — and if you’re wearing it in the heat, it doesn’t breathe very well.

The fit does run large, so go true to size if you want to layer in colder weather.

The oil and wax combination does make the fabric water fairly water resistant. While I can’t say it will be a replacement for a good parka, you won’t have to worry if the forecast calls for some light rain. The pockets all are covered with flaps, however there is no storm flap over the opening, which may allow water to seep in during a heavy rainfall.

How the Tin Cloth Cruiser Has Aged

  • Softens with age
  • Darkens at shoulders and arms first
  • Rewax every couple of years

I purchased this jacket in December 2020. I wore it throughout the late winter, spring and now again in the fall. The jacket was very stiff at the beginning and has definitely loosened up as I’ve worn it. The Tin Cloth doesn’t stretch much, so getting the right size at the outset is key.

The jacket has also gained some almighty patina, darkening at arms and shoulders. The patina will depend on how you wear it, of course, but it’ll lighten at your elbows first as the wax wears away.

The jacket comes with a tin of Filson branded oil finish wax that can be used to re-wax as needed. Rewaxing should be done every two years under normal wear, however aggressive use, such as exposure to lots of heavy rain or mud might require you to re-wax earlier. If you are going after pure aesthetics over function you can wax or not at your discretion.

What Would I Change About the Tin Cloth Cruiser

The jacket, while extremely well built and rugged, is not the best for work that requires a lot of movement. The lack of gussets at the shoulders make swing movement hard without straining against the jacket.

This brings me to my biggest complaint: the snap closures. They’re used instead of buttons along the opening, to secure the hood, and at the wrist cuffs. Filson says this is to allow ease of use when wearing gloves, however, it’s work to close them in the cold. Given the lack of flex in the fabric, I find it popping open when bending down or lifting objects (such as children).

I even went so far as to order replacement buttons from Filson to have it converted to proper buttons. This idea fell apart on two fronts. Filson’s customer service on the phone was fantastic, and was in the process of shipping out new buttons for free, until they found out that the shipping address was in Canada. This caused a myriad of issues and they were not able to ship. I took up their suggestion of heading to the Filson brick and mortar in Toronto.

Here, they were less helpful. They seemed unwilling to help me get the buttons, and then advised that if I were to find similar looking buttons on my own, or even found a way to get Filson branded buttons, that I would void the warranty on that area of the jacket.

Final Thoughts

  • Looks great
  • Ages beautifully
  • Withstands all tears and abrasions
  • Lifetime warranty (though trickier to uphold for Canadians)

  • Hard to dress up
  • No underarm gussets
  • Snap closures occasionally pop open

The construction and build quality are top notch but might be overkill unless you intend to make trekking through the bush a major pastime. If you are looking for a waxed jacket for work however, I might look elsewhere for a jacket that has gussets on the shoulders and a proper button closure that will not pop open. If fashion is your goal, the length of this jacket sets it apart from the more city friendly trucker and bomber styles, and goes for more of a country or farm vibe.

I would consider this to be a fair price for what you get. The build quality, weight and features of Filson’s Tin Cloth Cruiser make it a good value, as long as you are going to make use of all of them.

REI Hiking Boots Review

I am so happy to say that rei co-op has come up with a new line of hiking boots! The reason why this makes me so excited is that i love rei co-op products. One of my first hiking backpacks was the rei co-op flash. I still have it to this day because it is of excellent quality and it is pretty durable. Most of rei’s products are pretty affordable, and that includes the rei co-op flash hiking boots. The hiking boots are great for beginner hikers or for people that would love some lightweight hiking boots. Another plus is that they are made from recycled material! I am all about companies that strive to make the planet a better place so check out below to get my full rei co-op flash hiking boots review. I talk about comfort, traction, water resistance, weight, support, value, and much more.

REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots Review

How I Used The REI Co-Op Flash Hiking Boots

I hiked with the rei co-op flash hiking boots on 4 different trails around washington state. I experienced these shoes on different terrains like crossing streams, steep rocky areas, and muddy trails. Overall my experience was pretty great with the rei flash hiking boots, and i loved how lightweight they felt! Here are the trails i hiked to test them out:

  • Lake stuart: 9 miles round trip, 1665 ft. Elevation gain
  • Emmons moraine: 3 miles round trip, 900 ft. Elevation gain
  • Suntop lookout: 2.1 miles round trip,1100 ft. Elevation gain
  • Colchuck lake: 8 miles round trip,2280 ft. Elevation gain

The one thing that stops me from using hiking boots all the time is weight. Most hiking boots can be a little heavy or bulky when compared to hiking shoes. Luckily, the rei co-op flash hiking boots is on the lighter side compared to many other hiking boots in the market. Many hiking boots are usually over 2 lbs, while the rei co-op flash hiking boots is around 1 lb 13 ounces.

Usually, when hiking long trails, the boot’s weight can start to weigh you down, but luckily, while hiking colchuck lake (9 miles round trip), the weight of the rei co-op flash hiking boots didn’t bother me.

Colchuck Lake trail is known to be one of the rockiest trails in Washington. I was thankful that the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots worked well with the nonstop rocks and high elevation gain. This was especially true when going downhill, which is usually my least favorite part of the hike. Most of the time, I have trouble, and I slip or fall on trails, but the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots prevented this while hiking Colchuck Lake.

Water Resistance

There are streams and rivers all over Washington, and I was able to test out how waterproof the shoes were. Even though I walked through countless streams, my socks stayed nice and dry. So I submerged them in a shallow river to test them out, and yup, my socks were still dry!

When hiking shoes are waterproof, there can be some problems with breathability. This usually leads to blisters because your feet start to sweat when hiking. I luckily didn’t get any blisters on my feet the whole time I was testing out the shoes, which means that the shoes are waterproof yet breathable. This is a huge plus!

After putting the boots through hell on those 4 hikes (I am not the most graceful hiker), the shoes still looked in pretty good condition. There were no major scratches, no major peeling, and the fabric looks fine.

The rei co-op flash hiking boots will need to be broken into. Like most hiking boots, it is recommended to use them around town, at home, or on leisure walks before going on a difficult hike.

They are stiff at first, but they eventually mold to your feet. I do like that there is room in the toe box. I ordered half a size over my regular shoe size (i am usually a size 7 and got a size 7.5), and it fit just fine. I had no problems with my feet swelling or my toenails feeling uncomfortable.

My ankles usually bend like crazy after hiking many miles, and it definitely happened to me while hiking Colchuck Lake. Luckily, the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots was able to help prevent any major damage to my ankle when it bent(I have injured my ankle this past year while hiking while wearing other boots). I was pretty happy with the ankle support the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots gave me.

The boots’ insoles felt pretty supportive, but I know that this could be different for others. I have high arch feet, and the insoles felt perfect for me.

I have reviewed and bought many hiking boots throughout the years, and the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots is the most inexpensive boots I have had on hand. I always love that REI Co-op makes its products available to everyone while still maintaining good quality. The cost for the boots ($130) is a great price, especially for budget buyers and new hikers.

REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots Appearance

The REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots comes in three colors;  Bark/Moss, Granite Black, and Smoke/Lilac. I picked the Smoke Lilac because I usually wear more pink colors on my hikes. I really loved the Lilac color and even got compliments of the color on the trails. I love when outdoor brands make hiking apparel more attractive and fun for women! I hope REI Co-op adds even more fun colors in the future!

What I loved about the REI Co-op Flash Hiking Boots is how little they resemble hiking boots. Some hiking boots can look pretty manly, rugged, and bulky. Luckily, I can pretty much wear the boots in many places, not just the trails. Hey, I am all about versatility!

The style of the shoes and the weight makes it pretty easy for me to head to the grocery store or to the mall. When it comes to hiking, looks are probably one of the least important factors (which is why I put it at the bottom), but it is nice if your shoes are versatile. Plus, I like looking cute on the trails because that is my jam and my brand!

Eco-Friendly Materials

Usually, when you think about hiking boots, you do not think about Eco Friendly. Well, my friend, the new REI Flash hiking boots are made with recycled materials. Here are some of the specs:

  • Membrane uses 75% recycled polyester
  • Upper sole is 99% recycled PET
  • Upper sole is also 30% recycled TPU
  • TerraGrip rubber is 20% recycled

As someone who loves the outdoors, I am always so excited to hear when outdoor brands use eco-friendly materials, which is a huge plus. Read more on the recycled materials they use here
